Tour description
The tour begins with a leisurely ride up on the Muttersbergbahn. The hike begins at the mountain station and leads down a forest trail to the pond, and from there along the forest road toward Tiefenseesattel/Alpe Els. After about 1.5 km, the trail branches off onto a hiking trail toward the Armatin or Upper Armatin High Trail. The trail leads through shady forests and past the Armatin and Muttersberg ravines. Shortly after the Muttersberg ravine, the trail splits into the Upper Armatin Ridge Trail and the regular Armatin Ridge Trail. Keep left here and continue the hike on the Upper Armatin Ridge Trail. The revitalized trail continues to the Grünegg viewpoint. There, you can enjoy the view toward Walgau, Altmann, Säntis, and Hoher Kasten in Switzerland.
The trail continues through two more small ravines until it joins Furklastraße (a forest road). Follow the forest road downhill until the hiking trail branches off to the right. Then switch to the hiking trail and follow it downhill to the Wasserschloss. Finally, walk a short distance along the road to the starting point at the Muttersbergbahn valley station.
The Armatin High Trail above Bludenz has a long history. It was originally built to secure the wild ravines above Bludenz and thus protect the city of Bludenz and the town of Nüziders. Over time, the trail fell into disrepair.
Thanks to the initiative of Karl-Heinz Dobler, the Vorarlberg Alpine Club, and other volunteers, the trail was restored in 2023 and made accessible to hikers. The revitalization also provided an opportunity to learn more about the history of the torrent control structures above Bludenz.
Along the trail, there are three information panels that provide insights into this history. Additional information can be accessed via QR codes on the panels.
