It is the year 1580, and William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal), who works as a Latin teacher in the small English village of Stratford-upon-Avon, falls in love with Agnes (Jessie Buckley). In the village, it is increasingly suspected behind closed doors that she is not actually a healer but a real witch. But William does not care. The two throw themselves headlong into their life together and quickly have three children. First, Susanna (Bodhi Rae Breathnach) is born, shortly followed by twins Judith (Olivia Lynes) and Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe). However, for William, the dream does not end with the family. He wants to leave teaching behind and work as a playwright. However, this is rather difficult in the countryside. So, encouraged by Agnes, he goes to London. Initially, the family is only separated by distance, but then the plague sweeps through the land, killing Hamnet at just eleven years old. This drives William to write a play in honor of his son…
